What Now?

Jo was still feeling upset when she got home that afternoon. There had been a Thanksgiving assembly at lunch, which meant she hadn’t had a chance to make up with her friends. That was okay with her. She wasn’t even sure she wanted to make up with them. She could hardly believe how they were acting.

Okay, I know I shouldn’t have forgotten about that soccer game, she told herself as she sat in the assembly. But that wasn’t Ceci’s fault at all; it was mine. So why are Taylor and Kara taking it out on her by saying she can’t come to the sleepover? I thought they were nicer than that.

She thought about it all day. But she just couldn’t make her friends’ behavior make sense. They weren’t being fair at all!

When the final bell rang, Jo rushed out of class as quickly as she could. Emily called after her, but Jo didn’t slow down. She just called back that she was afraid of missing her bus. Then she ran off even faster.

After the bus dropped her off on Larkspur Lane, she walked into the house and hung her backpack on its hook in the front closet. Then she headed to the kitchen. Her mother and Ceci were in there making pies.

“Hola, Jo,” Ceci said cheerfully. “How was school?”
